New Delhi : NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu was on Thursday elected as the 15th president of India. She defeated Opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha. The counting of votes was held on July 21.She will be sworn in on July 25. Droupadi Murmu crossed the 50% mark of total valid votes at the end of the third round of counting.
64-year-old Murmu is the first Indian President who belongs to tribal community, the first Indian President from Odisha, and the first President of India to be born after independence. Also, she is the second woman to hold the highest office in the country.

On July 18, all elected MLAs and MPs across the country had voted for Ram Nath Kovind’s successor between 10 am to 5 pm across 31 locations including the Parliament House and 30 centres within state legislative assemblies. Of the 736 electors comprising 727 MPs and nine MLAs who were permitted by the Election Commission to vote at Parliament House, 728 electors cast their votes. The total turnout at Parliament House was 98.91 percent.
