The participation of women in the legal profession has been increasing over the past decade. The role of women advocates is important in various courts of the country. In an interview with United Bulletin, Madhya Pradesh’s experienced Advocate Varsha Gupta discussed topics like challenges in law, suggestions for making a career in law and dealing with the challenges of cybercrime. Here are the highlights of the conversation with her –

United Bulletin: How did you get interested in law and what led you to pursue a career in it?

Adv Varsha Gupta: There is an intersting story behind it. I had an Inquisitive and outspoken nature since childhood. Being interested in debate, speech, competition, decided to take knowledge of law and make a career in it.

United Bulletin: How have you seen attitudes toward women change over your years in practice?

Adv Varsha Gupta : The percentage of change in attitude towards women is still low. As far as women are top in every field, seeing them moving forward, their achievements are not tolerated by the male dominated society. Even today they feel that women should move ahead but with the shackles of dignity, society and family. The percentage of change has increased by 50 to 60 percent only.

United Bulletin: With the advancement of the digital age, cyber harassment has increased manifold across the country. How can this be curbed?

Adv Varsha Gupta: In the digital age, only knowledge of cyber law can save us from cyber harassment. Although cyber cell and the government are running an awareness campaign, the same should be taken care of and the cyber cell should be contacted immediately on any problem.

United Bulletin: What is needed to ensure greater equality between men and women in the legal profession?

Adv Varsha Gupta: Legal profession is not run by men and women but by legal arguments and knowledge. As far as equality is concerned then both the characters are equal in front of the court, but if we talk about job then there is no equality. Women should be confident in moving forward without making themselves feel reserved. Either equality or Reservation both things are not possible together.

United Bulletin: Do you believe that the legal profession has the power to shape society?

Adv Varsha Gupta : Yes it is true, law is the foundation by which the society operates. New laws, whether it is widow marriage, love jihad or same-sex marriage, have an impact on the society. Legal profession is the spark that can illuminate the society.

United Bulletin: Based on your experience, what advice would you give to young women lawyers?

Adv Varsha Gupta : I would like to say this to the youth, especially to the advocates, that you are an inspiration to other women. Therefore, they should first deal with domestic matters peacefully and improve the society. Emphasis should be laid on proper drafting after taking specific knowledge of the same law. Instead of dreaming of becoming a senior directly, guidance should also be taken from the experiences of other senior advocates.
