Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passes away, PM Modi expresses condolence

New Delhi : Ustad and famous tabla player Zakir Hussain, who gave India a distinct identity in classical music across the world, is no more among us. Famous tabla player has passed away at the age of 73. Zakir Hussain was undergoing treatment in San Francisco, America, where he died due to this serious illness.

During his illustrious career, Hussain received several awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990 and the Ratna Member Fellowship in 2018. Internationally, he was awarded the United States National Heritage Fellowship in 1999, the highest award for traditional artists in the country. His exceptional talent also earned him seven Grammy nominations, winning four of them, three of which will be received in February 2024

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the passing of legendary Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain.

The Prime Minister in a post on X wrote:

“Deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain Ji. He will be remembered as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music. He also brought the tabla to the global stage, captivating millions with his unparalleled rhythm. Through this, he seamlessly blended Indian classical traditions with global music, thus becoming an icon of cultural unity.

His iconic performances and soulful compositions will contribute to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers alike. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the global music community.”
