Justice Sanjiv Khanna sworn in as 51st Chief Justice of India, President administered the oath

New Delhi । Supreme Court Justice Sanjiv Khanna (64) was on Monday sworn in as the Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will be the 51st CJI of India.

President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice Khanna at a swearing-in ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

His tenure will be for about 7 months till May 13, 2025. Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019.

Justice Khanna’s name was recommended by Justice Chandrachud. Chandrachud retired from this post on 10 November at the age of 65. Justice Sanjiv Khanna, born on 14 May 1960, studied law from the Campus Law Center of Delhi University.

During his tenure in the Supreme Court, Justice Khanna has been a part of the Constitution Bench constituted for many important cases. The electoral bond scheme is prominent among the decisions of such Constitution Bench and larger bench. In this, the bond scheme was cancelled due to being unconstitutional.

Justice Khanna was also present in the bench that approved the decision of the Central Government to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Constitution Bench unanimously upheld the Centre’s move to repeal Article 370. This order also directed to restore the status of the state.
Justice Khanna agreed with the decisions given by the CJI and Justice Kaul.

Justice Sanjeev Khanna also headed the two-judge bench that granted interim bail to the then Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal.
